GreatSchools: What about transportation from school on cold days?

We live in Caton Ridge (EAST), but 1 mile from the school. On very cold days, too cold to walk, but we don't have ability to pick up from school, even though someone is home. How do parents do it? Do kids really walk in frigid temps/snow to/from school when 1 mile away?? Does anyone else have this problem or has anyone resolved it?

Does he have any friends at school who get a ride home that he could ask to give him a lift? Maybe offer the parent a bit of gas money ...
