Bainbridge Island is one of the best school districts in Washington State. US News & World Report ranks it as a "Silver Medal" school. We are consistently one of the top schools on the WASL test (Washington Assessment Standards Learning), a test that is being shortened and hopefully strengthened this next year. Mercer Island which is in Lake Washington is consistently ranked alongside Bainbridge Island as a top performer on the WASL as well as a silver medal school according to US News & World Report. But Washington State schools are notoriously underfunded and that is not going to change in this economy.
The Bellevue School District which is east of Seattle has three of the top ranked high schools in the state along with one in the Lake Washington School District. However two of these schools are International Schools and have a lottery to attend them. Living in the district does not guarantee that you children will get in. These schools I believe are "Gold Medal" schools according to US News.
If you are new to the area there are +/- to all areas and schools. Bainbridge is an island, you have to take a ferry from the city to it. The schools are good, crime is low and house prices for the most part are lower than they are for Mercer Island or Belleuve.
No district is perfect but Bainbridge does offer a great deal for families who don't mind a ferry commute. Traffic in the Puget Sound region is bad for the most part, we have very limited light rail and no subway system, only buses and a commuter train for those living further out. Many people prefer a boat ride to sitting on a bridge or freeway for hours everyday.
