There are several public schools that are very good in this area, however there are some that are truly underfunded, have high turnover and no strong leadership. The curriculum is set and not deviated from due to the SOL requirements, this so often causes a teacher to teach to the test rather than teaching children to learn and love learning.

Most of the private schools are able to plan and teach curriculum's with the students learning as the primary goal. Yes, they take standardized testing, but there is no cut in funding if a class/ grade / school does not test well so there is no motivation to teach to the test.

As I noted there are many good public schools, that do have creative teachers who still manage to teach their students in a multitude of ways without just teaching to the test. However this may vary from school to school as well as class to class within a school.
Private school teachers tend to have more creativity with regards to their curriculum and teaching methods, thus the students tend to learn more.

The private school my children attend, the standard test scores are on average 10-20% higher than our local public schools (and our local schools are supposed to be some of the good ones).
Most Private schools have uniforms a strong discipline program and high parental involvement. The uniforms are a wonderful tool to equalize many students and eliminate the modern 'hip' dress that individuals are wearing today that show the midriff or low pants. The students know what is expected of them and tend to work hard towards their long term goals at private schools.

Overall, I feel that private schools are a great option for almost any child that wants to succeed academically, wants a variety of ways to be taught subjects, and have access to many extracurricular activities as well as a very strong academic base.

At Corpus Christ, where my children go, they have over 25 extracurricular activities to include sports, academic and student government opportunities.
