For elementary, you have to have updated immunizations, birth certificate, and proof of residency within the boundaries of the school, then you fill out a bunch of forms, and voila! We'll be registering for Junior High next month, so not sure how that goes.

The local charter schools have enrollment lotteries, you apply for your child/children. If one child gets in, the others are all given preference. Same enrollment paperwork.

Utah Virtual Academy (K12 curriculum) also has a lottery. We applied, and our kids were accepted at the same time they were accepted to a charter school, so we had to choose public, charter or virtual school at home. Anyways, once accepted to UVA your child takes placement tests to determine which curriculum for math and language arts fits your child's abilities. Awesome curriculum, very intensive, history, art, and some literature all mesh together, so you're building on knowledge, and great experiments, internet resources, etc. Fine for one or two kids, way too much to do for four, especially with younger grades, so we had to opt for brick and mortar.

Davis School District has excellent schools, though, so we've been very happy.

There is also a SPECTRUM program for gifted children, they test kids in January, deadline to sign up for test is mid-December. Transportation is not provided to the schools within the district that have the program, parents must drive their children to and from. Kids meet in their own class, eat with their own class. More homework, more intensive. My understanding is that kids are evaluated each year and can be pulled out of the program and put back into the regular classrooms if they aren't performing up to par. But we opted not to use this program, so that's probably a poor assessment of this school option.
