I'm sorry the teacher had personal problems, but the sub should have been qualified to teach the kids spanish. That is very sad. My ideas of Texas schools are higher than that. I am coming from Florida schools which disappoint me greatly.
When my daughter entered Tivy HS she was committed to becoming fluent in Spanish by graduation. In her sophomore year, she reported she "wasn't learning anything" from her teacher who was frequently out for personal reasons. The counseling office went into detail about the teacher's "personal problems" and referred me to the department head.
The afternoon that I inquired with the Language Department Head, whom I met with at the end of a German language class. He was at his desk surrounded by male students watching Japanese pingpong on his personal laptop computer.
The department head dismissed the issue, my daughter NOT learning Spanish. He only offered "the way it is" as acceptable. The teachers personal problems and poor health seemed to justify the absence of learning in her classroom. Sad!
