Over 84% of the kids in Portland go to public school. PPS guarantees a spot for every child in the neighborhood school, and 2/3 of kids are in their neighborhood school. About 1/3 of kids go to a school other than a neighborhood school (Special Ed, families that move but keep their child in the same school, or families who choose an immersion program, tech program, or other option program). If you move within the district, you can choose whether to keep your child in the same school or to enroll in your new neighborhood school. If you want to transfer to an option program, you have to attend an information session AND enter the lottery, which happens once a year. The district has an Enrollment and Transfer Center to answer questions and oversee the lottery.
