We had our Senior in Dallas High School all 4 years. I have to say, it was dismal and frustrating to get any involvement from most of his teachers. We understood we, as parents, had to track his grades weekly in order to help him prioritize and keep his grades up, and we met a lot of resistance from his teachers that felt it was not their job to get his work graded on a weekly basis. They were always telling us that they had so much on their plate, to grade his work weekly interrupted their "meetings" and their other activities at school. He went from a 3.8 GPA to a 2.0, and he is 'graduating' with a less than solid understanding of English, Science, and Math. He's going to have an uphill battle, and is expected to attend a Community College as most 4 years won't accept his grades, much less his lack of educational comprehension. He was enrolled in AP classes the entire time, and I've not seen any realistic benefits. In fact, I think they were more lax than if he'd been enrolled in the normal classes. In conclusion, we won't be sending our two younger children to the district and are seeking to move back to Colorado, as this issue seems to be indicative of most Oregon school systems. I've never seen such a lack of graduates that are headed for joblessness or maybe a 2 year college. All you have to do to verify this is look at their grade reports and the percentage of dropouts to kids moving on to college afterward. The district is failing and has been for some time.
