Schrankytoo - you're right. Charter schools are publicly funded and most are not associated with Dayton Public Schools. However, enrollment instructions vary by building. Parents would need to contact the charter school they are interested in to find out how to enroll and what to do if they want to get in and are wait listed.

However, most of the time a parent can get one of our School Chooser guides from the Dayton Public School Assignment office. The guide also contains information on charter and private schools.

You can see a copy of the School Chooser online at www.greatschools.net/dayton as well or pick one up at a local library.

Don't forget about public charters schools for which information is not available at DPS!

Charter schools offer many various opportunities and learning styles which may better meet the needs of your family. Students that live in the Dayton area can attend a variety of schools, all which are free and include transportation.

Parents should visit the student assignment center at DPS. The building is downtown on Ludlow between 4th and 5th. The staff will give you a School Chooser guide and tell you more about the process including what paperwork you need. As of now, parents make choices to send their child to a particular building in Dayton as long as that building has availability. You can choose 3 schools I believe and be put on a waitlist for a school you prefer if you don't get in to the one you want. If the school your child ends up going to is doing poor academically, you have priority for getting in to a building of your choice that is not doing poor academically. Again you have to visit student assignment to make these wishes known.

I have heard good things about this office though and they are very easy for me to work with.

Good luck!
