Winston Salem offers a Zone Choice plan. Parents have a choice between different schools in their "zone" according to where you live. Parents register their child at their resident/primary school and then are given a card to choose 3 schools in their zone. The district guarantees your child will be assigned to one of the schools on your choice card, so make your selection carefully and in the order you would like from most desired school at #1 to least desired at #3. With Elementary there are many options, Middle Schools there are fewer, and High Schools the least. A lot of Middle and High Schools in this area are becoming Magnet schools, I believe to try and combat this problem of zone restrictions. Out of zone transfers are not unheard of, but are difficult to receive and you will be responsible for providing your own transportation if you choose an out of zone school.
