There is one centralized 'school district' that encompasses Raleigh, Cary, Apex, Holly Springs, Garner, Wake Forest, Knightdale, Rolesville, etc. The Wake County Public Public School System (www.wcpss.net) serves the entire area in and around Raleigh.

Within this district you will find base schools to which you are assigned (or reassigned), and magnets to which you must apply (and be accepted) in order to be allowed to attend. Some addresses will have a choice between an assigned traditional calendar base school or a year-round base school, some will be assigned only to a year-round. There are also several Charter schools in the area, public schools, but these each operate as their own individual 'district' of one school, you apply to them individually & provide transportation.

Schools within WCPSS that have the best reputation: Hunter, Ligon, Martin, Enloe (magnets), Leesville schools, Broughton, Sanderson, Davis Dr, Green Hope, Wakefield (base schools), Brassfield, Durant (year-round) + these public charter schools: Magellan, RCHS, Franklin Academy, Woods Academy
