Ah, there's a lot of pressure in NY about preschool, isn't there? And some of those preschools, sad to say, can be absolute pressure-cookers.
To get leads on schools, there's at least one guidebook about NYC preschools. Word of mouth is great too. Ask teachers too, if you know any. Or just call the local elementary schools, both public and private, and ask for their advice.
And here's the most important advice I ever got about choosing a school. It came from a kindergarten teacher and it's proved invaluable: when you tour a school, WATCH THE CHILDREN. Do they look happy, comfortable and secure? How does the staff interact with them? Go with your gut feeling on this. It is far more important than whether the facilities are shiny and new or whether the principal is erudite.
Well when I was looking for a pre school for my son it was through word of mouth. I lived in a family community, lots of children in the neighborhood, a few schools too. So it was'nt that hard to find one that felt would be beneficial for my son. I checked out alot of the preschools in the area before making a decision. And i enrolled my son in a private preschool. It was designed with a school setting. The children wore uniforms. The teachers were qualified teachers. It was a fun and loving environment as well as structured. They really prepared my son for Elementary school.
