The only great schools in this area are on post and there is not a high school on post. So if you are military, consider living on post in order to get your kids in a better school system. Pick is awesome.
None, especially if you have a special needs child. The special needs program in Waynesville is horriable. If you are moving here, contact the Rolla Regional Center for a case manager to help you with your IEP. Your going to need the help.
Military parents coming from Department of Defense schools as well as other more progressive school districts in the US will be frustrated and disappointed by the outdated curriculum especially in reading and writing, lack of innovative teaching approaches, and the "teach the state test" mentality. I looked at three elementary schools (Freedom (newest, but too large), Thayer (smallest, but weak principal) and finally settled on Wood Elementary. My children attended there for two years. It is not the best school they have ever been in as military children, but its strict, caring principal and loving, veteran teachers made it the best of the worst. . .Remember even the best principal, teachers, and students cannot overcome ridiculous curriculum mandates and guidelines by school district officials or the poor leadership of the school district administrators to include the school board and military officials. Also, please note that on post school enrollment is based on where you live, and where you live is based on rank--it is quite difficult to transfer to another school within FLW. I had to go through much red tape to do so for my children. Look at your designated school carefully before you accept on post housing--it will not be easy to change later.
