Are you asking about all levels of schools, or are you primarily interested in elementary, middle, or high school? Rochester public high schools compare favorably with private schools, and for kids with diverse interests I'd say public is definitely the way to go. Public elementary schools leave much to be desired, with one notable exception - Washington Elementary consistently outperforms both public and private schools in Rochester.
