Being it a small rural community there is not much for teens to do. Major problems within this age group with teens are arrests for smoking, curfew, drugs/drug paraphernalia, and drinking. Our high school is consistently struggling with meeting AYP and there are currently no programs that the school offers for struggling students. There is math tutoring and NHS students assisting students for a time in the early morning but that is it. Alternative classes are offered but this is for troubled students or consistently failing students. I did not find out about the alternative classes from the school staff but rather from a student. At the beginning of the school year my husband and I spoke with the counselor about alternatives for our son but was told they had nothing. We also inquired why a student who failed Algebra was continuing on to Geometry, we were told there was no other option, our son could not be put into a basic or alternative class for help...there was neither.
I have watched my son struggle all year. We tried the NHS students but they were a no-show and wasted ours and our son's time getting up early to drive him to school for the extra assistance.
We are doing the best we can here at home by following the teachers homework plans online and finding tutoring where we can.
The music program is one of the best. Football has had great success but once again it's the kids in the middle who get lost between the sports and the troubled kids where most of the schools time and attention is focused.
