My children attend Amana Acedmy, a fulton county charter school located in Alpharetta. It is a smaller school than the "neighborhood" schools, and has a very cultural population. Lots of middle eastern people, many black people, an ever growing amount of caucasion people. We are caucasion but love the diverseness of the school. No one is treated differently because of their outward appearence, because there are so many different kinds of kids there, not one feels superior or inferior. It is Kindergarten - 8th grade, so i love having an elementary and a middle schooler at the same school. Every friday is a half day so teachers can spend time planning and attending classes of their own. There are lots of field studies for the kids, which are different than field trips, as the kids actively participate in the planning and the trip itself; its not just a day off like traditional field trips. The school also has a very active "social curriculim" which relies on the students adhearing to the guiding principles by which Amana was founded. These are all based on not putting other's down, not leaving anyone out, not being forced to participate in a discussion if you don't feel like it, being allowed to express yourself through your best work; things like that. The students and teachers are expected to show mutual respect for each other in all they do, and they do. for more info, you can go to www.amanaacademy.org
