Overall, I've come to believe that each family shares a different experience or perspective of a classroom or school. As in much of life I think it depends on ones expectations and what you make of it. My daughter was in a small private school (200 children) for 8 yrs (starting in the 2 yr old class) and now in the 5th grade I've just now let her attend the big (900 children) public school. I think both schools have something different to offer. I wouldn't have traded the 10 child classroom environment and the safe cocoon of familiarity and personal nurturing for her for the world. She blossomed in ways she never would have in a sea of many. The most glaring difference so far about public is ITS ALL ABOUT F-CAT!! In the private school we had S.A.T.'s every year since kindergarten but that is still worlds away from this F-CAT bootcamp. Thank goodness this particular public intermediate school has a personalized approach from the Principal but I've heard some do not. The other big eye opener has been the behavior of the children themselves. In a small school environment children know they cannot misbehave much, they simply can't get away with it. En mass its a much different story. We had no 'guidance counselor' at the little private, there was simply no need. Additionally, in the small school your child will be far more recognized and receive far more accolades. Simply a numbers game. My daughters school had an award ceremony each marking period for the honors students, the public school could never pull that off. If your child thrives on positive reinforcement and being recognized for accomplishments that is a plus. While I'm happy this public offers PE class for instance, after 5 weeks my daughter still doesn't know her coaches names, there are simply to many children in the PE classes for any personalized approach. I would highly recommend private for young children and wait until older if possible for public.
