Has anyone looked into the Magnet program in Duval County schools? It is only open to Duval County peeps. I asked and it is not in St. John's county or others close by (I've heard that but have not checked into other counties). The schools are specifically geared toward certain areas of interest etc (yes, even elementary). Ex. Fishweir Elementary is focused on performing arts (ie. band, chorus, art), J. Allen Axson Elem (where my son went) is a Montessori school. It is just like sending your kid to a private school but not the tuition. At least, that is what it was like for our son at those two schools. We were paying nearly $8,000 per year before moved to Jax, FL for private Montessori and delighted about the Magnet Montessori school. All teachers are Montessori certified teachers and they do teach in the true montessori method. WAY cool. I don't have enough room to go into all of them but for those moving or even already here--it is so worth it to look into the Magnet programs. There is a Magnet "fair" in January that hosts all schools and they all have booths and lots of literature as well as teachers/Administration and some students on hand for questions. There are Gifted programs, computer/technology/science/math programs, etc etc. I'm so excited about this program (is it obvious) and I am so blown away when talking with a neighbor or friend and they say they just don't have the time to look into the magnet schools. Hmmm. Yes, there is bus service, clubs, after school care. All the regular "regular public" school things available. Check it out. You don't have to worry about "is this school a good one or not in my neighborhood"--they all are because they are specialized. Son is now in Kirby Smith Middle School and talk about a WONDERFUL education. I can't even begin to list all the way cool things offered. Plus, teachers are Masters and some PhD educators. The majority of the teachers my son has are really, really truly there because they want to teach and truly care about the student learning. It is so very wonderful--truly. See, I am really for this, duh! Oh, Kirby Smith is technology/science/math focused. Your child will receive an education rivaled by private schools--and probably even better. Check it out. I obviously don't have enough room here to give you all full scope of the Duval County Magnet program here. (no, I am in no way involved with/work for this program. Just a true believer and supporter and parent!) Michelle

Seriously? WOW... I hope someone can answer this question for us because my son is in Pre-K now and the school that he will be assigned to for kinder does NOT look good. It's maybe 5 mins from my house but I wouldn't mind driving 30 mins. if it means having him in a fantastic school.
