My son has been in both private and public schools in Boca Raton. I felt that he got a good start in his early primary years in private schools. They had a lot more flexibility in their curriculum. The only problem with private school is that classes are too small, you have one teacher per grade and socialization is hard. The public school has high standards for teaching to the FCAT tests. Although my child is in the gifted program, he is still expected to do the same curriculum to cover the FCAT basics. There is more peer pressure and pressures from the teachers to do extremely well. It has made him work harder to achieve better test scores. It really boils down to how much you want to be involved with your child's schools. Private schools do not always equate with better teachers and academic standards. High school might matters more as they are getting ready for college admissions.
I'm a 9th grader at a public school in Boca Raton. I attended private school from grades 1-8. Honestly, the comparison is unbelievable. I'm thankful everyday for my private school education. The difference in character, attitude, and education is completely evident in the studenst. I'm switching from my public high school to a private high school for the next school year. I feel that at the public school, you're just a number to the teachers. The education? Studying for FCATS. Instead of learning out of the book, we review problems that will be on the FCAT so that the school will have higher FCAT scores. Being exposed to the "real world"? I'll save that for college. Having friends at both private and public schools, I can also see a big difference. I wish I could go more into detail, but if you can afford it, opt for private school. Please make sure you’re choosing the right private school. I know a few private schools in Boca that are just as bad, or worse, than the public schools, so choose wisely.
