For enrollment in Kindergarten, pick up an application form from the School's office (which ever is the nearest public school to you) and you need to fill it out and submit it along with complete shot records for the child and a utility bill to show proof of residence. That's it. If you don't like your neighboring school, call up Vallejo Unified school district and ask them for the last date you can apply for a intra district transfer (within VCUSD) or for a inter district transfer (to Benicia for example). You can not transfer if you miss the application deadline so make sure you note that down. Also, consider that if you transfer and then want to return to your nieghboring school it may be hard to get in as seats would get filled in which case you would be asked to stay that year at the next nearest school. This is usually the case for people in the Wardlaw School District as it is in high demand and often people transfer to it.The only advice I would give as a parent is that which ever school you choose, do make an effort to meet all the kindergarten teachers and if possible view their teaching styles and make your preference known to the Principal in a written letter. Your child will be with this teacher for a whole year. Only you can decide which teacher will suit your child's temperament. Notice if the teacher arrives to school on time or not, does she care for the students when students have a problem, what is her disciplining style, how quiet is her class, does she ask questions or is it mostly passive learning? Projects? Also observe the classroom walls and see if there are learning materials/art work posted everywhere or not. A bare classroom shows lack of caring or apathy. You may want to see the teachers attitude towards children who are bright (does she challenge them or ignore them?) and kids who need help (are they getting it?). Is she affectionate?More important than the school is the teacher your child will get!
