The Torrance School District offers Open Enrollment or Intradistrict Permits to all Torrance residents. Open Enrollment application must be picked up at your school of choice and then turned in to the Health and Welfare office at the District Office. The Open Enrollment applicaton then sets this "district" as your 'home" school - meaning that the Elementary, Middle and High Schools will be based on the area you've applied for. You have to select the school on the app. and they let you know 3 months later. You will not have to apply again. The other option is an Intra-District permit. You must apply every year and it's based on availablity. This must be turned into the District Office as well. They do give special consideration for younger siblings applying to the same school as the older sibling. Other than that you will have to go to the board to plead your case. So far it seems pretty straight foward. I'm still waiting to hear on my Open Enrollment application. I turned it in Feb 09 and should hear from the District in May. The only downside is that the Kindergarten round up process starts in April. We won't be able to enroll or see the school/teachers until we are notified about whether or not we've been accepted.

The school your child goes to will depend on where you live. Its all done geographically. Downside to this.. there are a lot of great places to live in Torrance but you might be stuck sending your child to a school you wouldn't have chosen if you had a choice. We moved 2 blocks down so my son would be able to start kindergarden in a good Torrance school...
Otherwise you can go to the schoolboard and request a permit to send your child to a particular school Its always easier to get a permit if you work in the area near the school of choice....

I hope this helps.
