First, Sunland is a small community nestled between two mountain ranges. It borders La Canada Flintridge, La Crescenta, and Burbank to the east and southeast, and Lake View Terrace, Sylmar and the San Fernando Valley to the west and northwest. In the way of excitement, it's not. If you want fun, shopping and a variety of eating establishments, then you need to make the 20 mile drive to Pasadena. Folks just live in Sunland.

My son went to Sunland Elementary School (public) for fifth grade, and it was a great school. He had one teacher for all subjects Monday through Thursday, and on Friday, the fifth grade teachers did something they call "mixing," where fifth grade students would go to the other fifth grade teachers for their subjects. The reasoning for this was to get the students prepared to shift classes when they entered middle school. Sunland ES teachers were very communicative with the parents, which was great.

My son then went to Mt. Gleason Middle School, and what a difference. Bigger school, yes, as it's a feeder school for the three elementary schools in the area (Sunland, Apperson and Mountain View). My son's teachers were good, some better than others. He really liked his Language Arts teacher. The school is in need of improvement status again. This school is on a block system, where the students have three periods a day, two hours each, and homeroom. One of the positive points about this schedule is homework. However, if students get a lot of homework during the week, a student can wind up running out of time by Thursday to get all his/her homework done. Needless to say, my son is not attending Mt. Gleason this year, since they have been in the need of improvement category for so long.

There's a private Catholic school, Our Lady of Lourdes, in Sunland. My neighbor's granddaughter attended Our Lady, and the family was pleased with the school in general. There's also another private school which goes from K-12, Village Christian. I don't personally know anything about Village, although I've heard it is a good school.

The one public high school in the area is Verdugo Hills HS. They were on the same schedule as Mt. Gleason regarding class schedules. The school is located in a beautiful area, with the mountains behind it.

We're looking to relocate, so at this point, I'm not sure if my son will attend Verdugo Hills HS.
