First do your research on your local school (this website has great stats) and decide if you want your child to go there. You should also ask neighbors and preschool teachers for recent experiences from parents at the school. Then, starting in January, attend school tours for other San Mateo schools (except Baywood and Foster City schools..will explain later). Then fill out an intra-district transfer form (due in Feb) and cross your fingers!!!! Don't bother with Baywood and Foster city schools because they are impacted with neighborhood kids and do not accept any transfers. I highly recommend talking to the principal of the schools you are really interested in. If you are a couple years away and renting, research schools now and move into the neighborhood you like. It is the only way to guarantee a spot in your top school.
