The kids in SF are very liberal thinking (probably stemming from their parents) and tolerant due to the diversity. They rely a lot on MUNI as transportation, unlike the suburban kids who get picked up a lot. There is crime, I'm not gonna lie, which makes the kids seem more "tough" and street savvy. Expect to get your iPod stolen. The SFUSD is whacked, trying to get rid of JROTC and then do nothing about the school assignment process which is unfair to neighborhood children who can't get into the school they live directly across from. Let's face it, you have the good students from Lowell and the not-so-good from Burton. Yet they all live the in the same City.
Lowell was a great high school that helped prepare you for college, very competative spirited students, but the diversity was slim to none and very clickish.
I would say that in many of the public schools, there is not a lot of diversity of thought allowed. At Back To School night in the high school, three posters jumped out at me. One was for the ACLU, another for Planned Parenthood, and another with the rainbow flag saying it was a safe place for all kinds of people, BUT I'm sure if I added a note asking if it was a safe place for Christians or Republicans, it would have been covered with intolerant graffiti. If I had put up a note next to the Planned Parenthood poster suggesting that adoption is a choice to consider and reminding people that Planned Parenthood doesn't make money from promoting adoption, that too would have been an unacceptable opinion. San Francisco is a very intolerant city.
