According to the locals, this was once a highly regarded school district. This is not the case anymore. I have had several very bad experiences with the school in this district, and the teenagers I know that have attended school in this district did NOT learn a thing! Half of them can't even make change, figure a tip (percentages), or know U.S. History! There is one good thing I will say about RUHS is Mary Little (principal) She is actually willing to reach out to help the kids that are deserving of an education. I will also say that Beth Eiser will go that extra mile. They are the two bright spots on an otherwise murky horizon.
The teachers are careless. They are also afraid to get involved. They are so worried about hitting that project goal when it's due, that they fail to teach the children anything. Because it takes up too much time in class.
The district in general is way down the list of great schools. Mira Costa is ranked higher (at 100) and Redondo Union is ranked closer to 200. (178, I believe).
Over my child's history with this school district, he has been beaten by classmates (1 incident resulted in a broken nose, a previous incident produced a broken thumb) he has had items stolen from him, (ipod, money, cell phone) and family history items lost by his teachers (Spoon from ancestory) He has also been called "gay" to which the teachers well aware of this simply told me that "They don't know what it means." Then of course every single day of his elementary school life he was beaten by his classmates at school, and on the way to and from the school. He began to make up excuses to not go because the teachers were not protecting him even when they bore witness to such acts. He became depressed, gained a lot of weight (which caused even more torment) and stopped participating in school and school activities. He attended a class (stage-craft) in which the class could work in the auditorium for pay after school, during school vacations and on Saturday's. He was injured on the job. Instead of immediately calling 911 (like a normal school would do...) the instructor had to call the vice principal first to get instructions! By the time the paramedics got there (because some kids started calling 911on their cell phones )I was already there from 25 miles away. (The kids witnessing the incident were the ones to inform me - not the instructor or principal) This instructor later told his class that my child was at fault (when those witnessing the incident deny the accusation and instead tell me the instructor caused the accident as well as had the kids using improper tools in which to move the item.) Now...this instructor is STILL teaching at RUHS and my child will always have problems and pain and scarring. I could go on, but it would be a novella.
In parting I will say that Mary Little and Beth Eiser have truly gone out of their way to help my child. However, I believe that for the most part, they did not come into his life until the last four years. Unfortunately, my child was already disgusted (as was I) with this school district and their practices of cover-up the bad so it looks good to the home owners and will keep the taxes high in this area.
For me, if I could do it all over again, I would have moved my child to the east coast of the U.S. (any of the 13 original colonies) where we would have been assured our child would get a proper education.
