Sorry it took so long to answer - the best schools differentiate their curriculum in every grade so that children are learning every day. There should be a wide variety of afterschool programs with scholarships available for those who cannot afford to attend without scholarships. There should be before and afterschool care on site.
A library with a librarian is absolutely necessary. PE should be available at least 3 times per week as a subject and social studies should be taught beginning in kindergarten.
Most of all the children, all children at the school should feel loved by all of the adults they come in contact with throughout the day.
My son goes to Escuela Bilingue Internacional, a dual immersion Spanish-English school that serves children starting at age 3 and will go up through 8th grade. It's the kind of school that I wish I had been able to go to myself: rigorous project-based curriculum (International Baccalaureate), an interational focus (the Spanish language makes this easy as there are so many Spanish-speaking countries in the world), the school will be adding Mandarin as a 'second' language starting in third grade. And, it is probably the most diverse independent school in the Bay Area with over 50% families of color or of mixed heritage and more than 20 nationalities represented at the school! Its website is www.ebinternacional.org.
