It depends on what you're looking for:
- Oakland has some great schools for elementary, though mostly in neighborhoods where the housing costs are higher. It is very hard to get into an elementary school that is not your 'assigned' school based on where you live, unless you live in an area where the schools are failing. Public middle and high schools are not great.
- Berkeley has good schools as well, and they have a somewhat complex application process with three 'zones' of schools which is their attempt to do some equalizing of the 'hills' schools with the 'flatland' schools. They've created three swaths in the city from flatland to hills and they mix up the students in these swaths.
- Albany has very good schools, though there is less diversity of the students and families.
- Piedmont is right next to Oakland with very good schools but also very pricey housing.
- Close by, but a tunnel away, are Orinda, Moraga and Lafayette which have very good schools but also much much less diversity in communities that have a fair amount of money.
