It really depends on the city. We live in a city that people love to move to. Unfortunately, the housing cost are ridiculous and the schools are pretty bad.
Many people that are on a certain side of the freeway almost have no choice but to enroll their children in private schools. They are very happy.
Many others of us, who are at "good school" do not find them to be 1) family friendly, 2) culturally competent and 3) while most of the kids are doing well African American and our Hispanics children are not achieving as well. I dont blame this on the children I choose to believe they have not responded to the typical teaching.
LA in general has good public schools in Torrance, El Segundo, Burbank, Clairemont, Baldwin Hills, San Marino, La Canada, some areas of Long Beach and I am sure there are others.
Most others enroll in private schools. In Pasadena almost 40% of residents have their children in private schools. Pasadena has a horrible school system and your kid has a special need, it is even worse. They have open lawsuits to prove it.
I hope that helps.
