Within the LBUSD, look at particular schools, for they vary widely. Aside from reviews on greatschools, this link is helpful:

Also, talk to parents! The schools I hear of most often are Newcomb, Tinscher, Prisk, Cubberly and Longfellow. Good luck!

ABC school district and Cypress

LBUSD is the only district that i have any direct experience with. they serve the entire long beach, lakewood and signal hill area. i grew up in the LBUSD, now my own daughter is going to school in the LBUSD. i have no complaints, except for the statewide budget cuts.
