There are many great schools in Tucson, I like the Tanque Verde Unified School district the best, the standards are high and they have exelling scores on the aims test
The International School of Tucson is far and away the best elementary school in town. Standards are international and not local, teachers all have degrees and certification. Basics like readng and writing and numbers are covered thoroughly - six year-olds are reading chapter books independently, writing in full sentences and meeting Arizona standards for Grades 3 / 4 in math. Inquiry and curiosity are stressed, independent learning and the joy in doing activities for their own sake and not for the threat of a test or the reward of candies or bicycles are integral. The children are all happy and it is hard to get them to leave. The school offers choir, art, science, soccer and chess clubs, dozens of field trips all over Sothern Arizona and dozens of visits by local experts. Yes, the school is private meaning choices and sacrifices for many families, but all of this is included in the fees which are about the same as most childcare anyway. IST is not for everyone, but it is the best elementary school in town.
