I'm a developmental psychologist by training, so a developmental approach is important to me when choosing a school to meet the needs of a 5th-8th grader. Waldorf schools are known for their developmental curriculum. The History curriculum spans 5,000 years and teaches through biographies that are emotionally engaging to the student, thereby improving their retention and learning. The Science curriculum is phenomenological, meaning that students experience a phenomenon first and then think about it on their own before being "given" the answer. This promotes discovery learning which is retained the longest. The Waldorf middle school is great. Alabama Waldorf School in Crestwood/Forest Park/Avondale area offers grades 5-8 (in addition to Nursery through Grade 4). alabamawaldorf.org. 205.592.0541
Christain Alternative was a great middle school. It is not the normal altrnative school. It is the alternative for the gifted. The teachers really prepare you for the future(as in high school). The people are also friendly.
