Why is my seven year old unable to transfer information learned to other areas?

dfasnacht
For example, she will practice making her manuscript letters correctly in a manuscript practice book, but I don't see her making them correctly in anything else she writes. I see this happen in other subject areas also. What could this mean?

It takes time and sometimes a fair bit of it before young children transfer a practiced skill into actual usage. In the practice book, she sees the letters and copies them. It will take a while before that letter formation becomes natural to her and even longer before it becomes axiomatic.

If it ever does - I can write very nicely in a practice book but without the letters in front of me and certainly without lines, my handwriting looks nothing like the practice book.

The same can hold true for spelling and many other skills. A child can spell a word verbally and then when they come to write the word have no idea how to spell it. They can't transfer the information from one task to the other - they can't apply the skill in every situation. Yet.

I once taught a child to tie his shoes but when a classmate asked him then to help him tie his shoes he said "I don't know how to tie your shoes. Teacher only taught me how to tie my shoes!"

What grade is your daughter in? First, or second? Is it a public school, or private? Is your concern limited just to her printing the alphabet, or does she have difficulty with other academic concepts? How is her reading? Have you had a Parent-Teacher Conference yet this year? What did her teacher say?
I know I've asked a lot of questions, but in order to give you better advice, it would help to have more background information...
