Ahhh! Desperate mom needs help on school choice!

Anonymous
My husband and I are moving to the Petaluma area from Chicago. I can't seem to find one decent school in the area. Keep in mind I am used to the great and financially stable schools in Illinois. I am so surprised at how little the schools in CA have to offer the children. Can anyone calm my nerves and tell me where to send my son who will be entering kindergarten 2010? If Catholic school is the way to go, then please let me know which one. (Are the schools any better in Napa or Sonoma?) Thank You!

I'm not in Petaluma either but I used the "Find a school" feature to look up some public schools in Petaluma and found some that have good reviews. I know it's hard to plan from a distance-- it's always best when you can visit the schools to get a first hand view. But you can use this website to compare schools in Petaluma, Napa and Sonoma. If you see a school that interests you, click on the "check to compare" box.

Here's a list of the public elementary schools in Petaluma: www.greatschools.net/california/petaluma/elementary-schools/

Here's a link to compare Petaluma with other cities nearby: www.greatschools.net/cities.page?city=Petaluma&state=CA

If you can go a little farther south, check out Marin County. The schools there are some of the top-rated schools in Northern Cali, although the area is pretty pricey.

Also good to know is that California has an open enrollment policy so your child can attend any school in the district as long as there is room. Definitely contact the school district office to find out how enrollment works and for deadlines.

Good luck!!

Hi. I'm actually in the Chicago area, not CA, but since you're asking about Catholic schools, I would expect their local Diocese to have a website devoted to local school performance, much like the Archdiocese of Chicago provides online information. While it won't necessarily tell you how parochial schools compare to the local public schools, it should be able to give you information about how they compare to one another....
