What is the difference between Porter Gifted and Nobel Magnet?

ralphsmom
My son is in 5th grade and I am starting to look into a Middle School. I am confused with one saying Gifted and the other Magnet. What is the difference? I only compare API scores, which is all I really know. What else should I be looking at? Please help before the choices brochure comes out?

LAUSD mixes the scores of the magnets and the regular population at each school, so that while I'm sure Porter's magnet population scores high, the other kids score less so. Also, Nobel has an SAS program (a magnet without being called a magnet) which is like having another group of strong academically minded kids.

Thanks for your quick reply. If Porter is a gifted magnet, then how is it that they didn't score nearly as high as Nobel, which is not a gifted magnet? So if my child is gifted, is it wise of me to pick Porter? I am taking the tours, but I was just wondering.

Hi Ralphsmom and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community. I'd love to welcome you to join the GreatSchools LAUSD Parents group located here: community.greatschools.net/groups/13589

You'll find specific articles that cover the general bases on these topics.

You're comparing two magnets at Porter and Nobel. Porter is a Gifted magnet, where the kids who go to school there qualify through a variety of assessments as being either gifted or high ability in one or more areas.

Nobel is a Math & Science magnet. It's open to all students interested in attending. They still have quite a bit of honors students, and they are clustered together in courses.

I'd definitely contact both schools and go on their tours to get a real feel for each of the campuses before you make any decisions.

But if you post this question in the LAUSD Parents Group you're likely to get a post or two from parents at one or both magnets.

Good luck, and hope to hear from you soon.
