How to prepare my kid for GATE. Also where to get more details on what the kids should do to prepare for GATE.

sanjayparsi
My daughter is in 2nd grade. I was told that completing GATE at early stage helps them a lot. I would appreciate if anyone can provide details on how to help my kid appear for GATE and what should she do to prepare for the GATE.

Hi and welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community. You're one valley over from me, so we're at least talking about the same state. I'd find out specifically from your school district how they admit students into the GATE program. As healthy11 alluded to, GATE is the Gifted and Talented Education program. And if your child has been identified to be tested, then there's not much to do except encourage her to do her best.

I'd also encourage you to talk to the gifted coordinator at your child's school to have all your specific questions answered. They can tell you what programs are available at your school and whether they cluster gifted students or if they have all GATE classes.

Good luck, and let us know what you find out.

Hi. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't GATE = Gifted and Talented Education? I'm not sure what you mean "completing GATE at early stage helps" ~ the classes are attended throughout one's schooling....
If you're talking about getting accepted into a GATE program to begin with, different school districts across the U.S. have different ways of identifying which children qualify...In my area, they take the top percentage of performers on statewide achievement tests, although I've heard of other areas where they screen all students with IQ tests, etc. There really isn't "preparation" for those tests in an academics sense, I'd just ensure your child was well rested and eats a good breakfast the day of the testing. If she happens to be sick, you might ask if the school would let her take it at a different time.....
