Why are the children who live a mile away walking to school? That is a very long walk for the children.

MsHawkins, welcome to GreatSchools Parent Community.

Every school district is different, in fact, our district just raised the minimum distance from two miles to three miles due to the budget cuts that every state is experiencing. Since it's a densely populated suburban district, there are few kids that live 2-3 miles away from their schools, so very few students in my district are bussed.

I agree small children should be accompanied, but perhaps you can organize parents to take turns or organize the smaller ones to walk with older children. Talk to your principal and see what other options might exist.

If you don't hear anything constructive back, take those same parents with you and speak at a school board meeting and have them hear your concerns.

Good luck and let us know how things turn out.

Hi,

Guess the reason is that since the school is just a mile away, it should be easy for a parent to drop them. Well not really convincing and i agree with your question here. Infact i lived in NJ a few years ago when my son was 8 and since the school was less than a mile, i ended up dropping him off daily. In summer though the kids enjoyed walking together as it was about 5 mins walk.... But a mile maybe a bit too long esp for kids.
