Daughter is interested in applying, and we've heard some great things about the top-tier schools, but would be interested in hearing from others who have attended, or are considering boarding schools for their children
Are boarding schools worth the money?
Parent Answers to "Are boarding schools worth the money?"
To healthy11: I should have mentioned in my original question - daughter was introduced to the boarding school concept by our middle-school-to-high-school placement counselor during "High School Night" (our local school went only through middle school, and so she invited both local high schools and boarding schools). Daughter seemed attracted to the academic challenge, and I have to say seemed a bit influenced by the extensive facilities as well..
Since then, she discovered a blog site (www.BoardingPOV.com), written by a girl that went through the same decision last year - and is now writing about her experience in boarding school.
Having said all that, we definitely are planning to visit several schools first - along with the open houses of our local high school options. Thanks for the suggestion to talk to recent school graduates - that would seem to be good advice no matter where or what type of school.
I have to say I'm surprised your daughter would be the one who brought up the subject. Does she have some friends who are applying, also? I would definitely not feel comfortable sending my child to a facility that I hadn't personally visited, and I would request that the schools provide names of some recent graduates that you might contact. I'd ask those young women how they feel their boarding school experience prepared them for college, and if they had any regrets. They can give you far better information than we can.
Boarding schools are rather like sending your child to college a bit early. If the child and your checkbook are both ready for that, why not?
Boarding schools are their own experience - and each one is different from the next. The top tier boarding schools are a point of entry into a very small and exclusive group.
Good luck with your decision.
