After school programs?

Anonymous
Like many, my wife and I work full time jobs, but the elementary schools get out so early on a normal day, and before 1 on Fridays.

I'm wondering what after school programs people would suggest

Another idea that one of my neighbors used was contacting their church, or the local senior center...given the economy, she found a grandmotherly person who wanted to supplement her social security income. The woman still drove, and was willing to come to the neighbor's home for an hour or so in the morning, after the parents left for work until the bus came, and then she went back to her own place and returned to meet the kids getting off the bus in the afternoon, and stayed until the first parent got home. She even drove the kids to after-school sports practices on occasion...

Wow, that's tough. I know how it is, with both parents working full time. As healthy11 suggested, maybe another parent might be able to help you out after school.

Sadly, there is no YMCA anywhere need us same with the Girls club. Benicia is a nice place to live, but there is almost no way to work anywhere close that makes a decent wage. I'm working in Oakland and my wife works in Fairfield ;(

It sounds like your child's school doesn't have an after school program.

Have you check with your local YMCA? When my son was in elementary school, the neighborhood YMCA had an after school program for the local elementary schools. The YMCA even had a pick-up service from the local schools (there was an extra cost for that service).

There's also the Boys & Girls Club. They may have services similar to that of the YMCA.

Good luck, and please let us know what you've found out.

If there's a YMCA in your area, I'd definitely look into their programs. Otherwise, you might consider asking if one of your child's classmate's parents is interested in doing after-care.
