Moving to San Antonio

Anonymous
We are moving to SA and need to find a great school for our daughters. (5th grade) Both have IEP's and require extra help with one requiring only a little and the other more substantial. We want to rent a home to begin with then look around. Can someone advise me on a good area to look and good schools with outstanding and flexible Special Education programs?

Hi. I'm not from TX, but I do have a child with special ed needs. I always recommend that families contact a local support group for whatever conditions their child has (ie, www.chadd.org for ADHD, www.interdys.org for reading difficulties, www.autismspeaks.org for spectrum issues, www.thearc.org for Down's, etc.) and network through those parents to find out about the best schools and other resources in a given community.
For general qusstions, I also invite you to join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554

Thanks for the information. Since my daughter doesn't fall into a "normal" category it's hard to know where to look. Even her wonderful teacher this year says she hasn't had a child like mine in her 30 years of teaching. Any suggestions?

You haven't explained what your daughter's learning issues are, but I I'm not surprised that regular classroom teachers haven't "seen" many kids like ours...what was more frustrating to me is that my son's private tutor, a past president of a state special ed support organization, claimed he was a conundrum, unlike any other kid she'd ever worked with...My son is highly gifted, but has ADHD and dyslexia and dysgraphia. Some things he "gets" right away, and other things he just can't remember for the life of him.
Please do join the Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554 where you'll find many more families dealing with different special education issues. Another good group where I know there are some TX parents is www.millermom.proboards107.com although I'm not sure if any are from San Antonio.
