Need help finding affordable counseling for my Gifted nephew?

Mom4University
My cousin alerted me that her son, who is in the 5th grade, is having trouble in school, he has been acting out by being disruptive, where the teachers and school cannot control him or his behavior. His behavior is now to the point of possible expulsion. I also found out that he is Gate identified, and has been struggeling with his education and grades are below grade level. She is desperate for help but I am clueless on what to do. I know Gifted children have special needs, but his needs have been neglected. Is there a type of gifted counseling that will better understand him psychologically and also help him with his studies since he is has been an underachiever. Any is greatly appreciated.

My daughter is very smart but has both dislexia and ADHD. Now that she has been diagnosed it has made a world of difference in getting her the support she needs. She is getting good grades, but struggled with some subjects. We found a great tutor with very reasonable rates from the RIM High School. There is a list of approved tutors at RIM high. I also recommend Dr. Cibelli (Psychologist) from San Bernardino/Redlands. She is a PHD with lots of experience and does many tests to get to the bottom of the issues. She was the first to diagnose all the issues correctly (we've seen other doctors before). She is covered under mosts insurances. Good luck!

I concur with MSMomm, as I have a highly gifted son who also happens to have ADHD, and the term for kids like that is "2e" or "twice exceptional." I have listed a large number of resources at community.greatschools.net/groups/16042

Hello Mom4University:

You might want to suggest to your cousin that she have her son see his pediatrician, as they may be other reasons for his behavior problems. His pediatrician can then make further recommendations, possibly for a pediatric psychologist/psychiatrist.

While I'm not an expert or doctor, it sounds like your nephew may have other issues, like as ADD/ADHD. A pediatric psych. can identify those issues, and others, with some testing.
