I need help with my gifted child.

myrandi
Our daughter is in the 2ed grade. She test mid 4th grade in reading and the top 97% of the state in math. The school system won't give her advanced classes until the 3ed grade. She is so bored. What can we do to force the system to challenge our child?

Have her tested at Sycamore School. My daughter has been there from pre-school thru 7th grade. Your child will be challenged while having a great time.

There's a book called "Teaching Gifted Kids in the Regular Classroom" by Susan Winebrenner that you might want to look at, although I think it's geared towards kids in middle school and up... I believe a different author has written a similar book for Gifted Young Children, but I don't have the details offhand. You might also want to join Greatschools Gifted Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11537

I would suggest you work with your child's teacher to see if your daughter can be given more challenging work that is in line with her academic level. Appealing to a teacher's care might be faster than trying to change the system.

The National Association for Gifted Children has a SC chapter which might be able to help you to understand your child's rights. This is their website.
