Non-Verbal Learning Disorder for Pre/K

jjsantacruz
I may have a child (5-year old) with NLD. Though he's having an evaluation done with a psychologist in two days. It started out with him acting up at school and making a long story short the school asked us to get him evaluated. I have just learned of NLD and he has most of the characteristics.
1. What works for you or your child at this age?
2. What other disorders usually accompanies NLD?

I suspect it would be confusing for your son to go back and forth between preschool and kindergarten, because the expectations sound very different.

I'm a bit confused, when you say he's at a private school of 20 kids with 3 full time teachers....Is that to say there are only 20 students in the entire school, or 20 in his current class? Do you see him going to 1st grade and beyond at the private school? If they are wondering about his readiness to be in kindergarten, they probably won't feel he's going to be ready to move up to 1st grade, even if he stays in kindergarten full-time now. On the other hand, if your son really does have NVLD or CAPD, it's not apt to "go away on its own" so if you had him repeat a grade now, he'll just be a year older but still dealing with many of the same issues next year.

Does the private school have any students, at any grade level, with learning differences? It may be that they're so small they don't have the expertise or resources to help kids who are "atypical learners."
I guess I'd leave your son where he is right now, until you have the evaluation done, so you know what you're really dealing with. As I mentioned earlier, please do join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554 and www.millermom.proboards107.com for more information and support.

Thank you all for your support in getting thru this period of "unknown". Yes, we have appointments line up to see a few specialists in the next two weeks.

My first reaction is to pull him out of kinder...which he is not having a good time as he's being "put aside" often in class. And put him back to preschool which he enjoyed and loved the teacher. At the same time I don't know if that's the wise thing to do. He's at a private school of about 20kids with three full time teachers. Or should i try to put him a few days at a preschool and a few days at kinder? Both options are available to me. Or will this be confusing?

Hi. Unfortunately, it's really difficult to diagnose children, particularly young children, because there is such a wide variation in what's considered "normal development." Over the years I've been participating in support groups for families with LDs, I would say many children with NVLD's have ADHD-inattentive type, and/or CAPD. The thing is, most audiologists won't even evaluate for CAPD until a child is at least age 6, and age 8 is even better, because the physical growth of a child's head/hearing/brain development is still ongoing.
It's also important to realize that NVLD and CAPD are NOT recognized disability categories for IEP's at schools, although ADHD may enable a child to get an IEP under OHI (Other Health Impaired.)
I would encourage you to join Greatschools Learning and Attention Difficulties Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11554 for more information and support, and another forum with quite a few parents of kids with NVLDs is www.millermom.proboards107.com

What characteristics lead you to believe he fits NLD? That might help in anyone answering you as to what other dx's might be appropriate. However I would imagine that you are entering a period of testing and numerous visits with differing specialists who will be better able to assess and give you answers...answers that will most likely lead to more questions, but we will all be here to help you sort it out...I think you will find that what works for NLD is dependent on what the underlying cause of the NLD is...Best wishes to you and your child on finding the answers you are searching.
