we tried to get KaBOOM at my daughters LAUSD school and the district said NO, NO COMMUNITY BUILD PALYGROUND AT LAUSD. I pointed out that a LAUSD school had a KaBOOM playground, the district rep said yes, but that it was a mistake. I was pissed- KaBOOM was going to give our school $35,000.00 start up pluse the community build would have saved $60,000.00. We did get our non community build playground (for more $$$$ then KaBOOM would have been) and are very happy with it. If your school allows a community build, KaBOOM is a GREAT program. Good Luck.

I recently heard of a pretty cool non-profit called KaBOOM, that helps communities build playgrounds. It might be worth looking into: kaboom.org/

Swings haven't been part of any new playground I've seen since my son was a baby (and he's in college). Sadly, you have to really hunt to find them anywhere anymore. But there are so many neat combinations of rock walls, zip lines, slides, and bars your kids will barely notice and you barely will. :)

There is tons of fun playground equipment that doesn't include swings or teeter totters. Don't worry. Our school has one of those large climb on equipment things with stairs, slides, a bridge and various things to hang or climb on. Check out some playground equipment websites like gametime.com. Good luck!
