Unfortunately, there is statistical justification for not allowing children to retake the same test within a year's period. Familiarity with the test questions themselves can result in higher scores. Some standardized tests do have "A" and "B" versions, which are designed and normed for the same age level, but I don't know if the CogAT has multiple versions, or if your school would have purchased more than one. I guess it doesn't hurt to ask, but I have to say that many schools don't begin gifted programming until 3rd grade, so even if your son doesn't get accepted until next year, he's probably not going to "fall behind" so long as you continue to provide an enriched environment at home....
No matter what, I invite you to join Greatschools Gifted Group at community.greatschools.net/groups/11537
In his school district it's only offered once a year. The reason I want to have him retested is that he took the test while somewhat sick. They had said that if you missed it you wouldn't have a chance to take it again. Only after the fact did I find out that they actually did have makeup tests for it. Yes, his placement in gifted learning depends on it. Even though he was sick he made a 96% average and he needs a 97% to get in. His teacher had recommended he get tested because of his ability and cognitive skills. So we want to know if there's usually some way around the once a year policy due to circumstances like illness. Thanks.
Hello. Unfortunately, you've posted your question on a nationwide forum, not on a specific school's site. You'll have to call your child's school directly to find out.
If you don't mind my asking, what is the reason for you wanting to dispute the results? Is your child's placement into a gifted program dependent on this right now, or will the class be retested again next year? It's possible for any child to have an "off" day, due to lack of sleep, coming down with an illness, etc., but usually schools won't retest unless there's something significant that would be impacted.
