As Magnetmom asked, what is the background check for?
In my area, there are background checks done for parents who volunteer their homes to be "safe houses" for children. The program is intended to be a way for kids who might be walking home from school, or walking to a bus stop, to have a place to run if they feel threatened or scared (ie, a strange car approaches them or some kids are bullying them.) Every semester, there's a different color poster that we're supposed to display in the window, and if we're not home, it's supposed to come down.

I know when I volunteered to be a leader in Cub Scouts, I had to go through special training and a background check, because they want to avoid issues to potential child abuse, and to encourage leaders who suspect any problems to report it. There was a similar requirement for Sunday school volunteers at my church.

While I haven't heard of a background check requirement being necessary for just coming into the regular public school classrooms, I have nothing to hide, and my feeling is that I'd rather schools be safe than sorry.

Hi, Parent30,

A background check for what? Volunteering in the classroom?

Our district requires a TB test for parent volunteers, but no background check or fingerprints run. However once a person gets paid in some capacity, they run finger prints.

If you are concerned about privacy, I can understand that, but safety of the students is always the most important concern.
