Cooper Elementary in Clayton -- Yikes!

Anonymous
I am new to NC, and when I moved down here, Clayton had rated pretty well for schools. However, I didn't do enough research as far as what district elementary school I would fall in. It happens to be Cooper, which I am not thrilled with, after reading horrific reviews, seeing the low test scores, and driving through the area and seeing teens hanging on street corners.

Is there a way to get my kids into a different school district? Riverwood seems like it's high rated, and actually only a mile away from me.

Anyone else have this issue? I'm looking into charter schools as well, but I'd really like them to go to riverwood, if possible. Thanks for any help!

Cooper is really a pretty good school. Don't let the location fool you. I have had two children go to Cooper all 6 years. We never had any problems with the area and the PTA and staff were always wonderful. A school is what you make it. You can ask the county office to be assigned to another school, it really depends on your need and the load on the other school. Don't be afraid of Cooper, just be involved!!!

Sorry you are having trouble with that school. Yes, we were cautioned about that school district also. It seems to be the only one in Clayton that receives questionable remarks. However, I do have a teacher friend who used to teach there and she said she enjoyed it and her kids were good. We are in West Clayton which we really, really like. Great school, well organized and well staffed. Good test scores also. My nephew is in Riverwood and they like it there as well. The only way I have heard of people switching districts is if your assigned school fails to make adequate yearly progress for more than 2 years in a row, you are allowed to be assigned to another district. Otherwise, you may have to move. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions yet! There is a charter school opened now in Smithfield, maybe check that out. I've also heard East Wake Academy Charter school in Zebulon in pretty good and not horribly far. Good luck.
