I would be concerned if my child's prospective school rated a 1 ( the lowest rank) but I would not be overly concerned if it had a middle score or above. The ratings on Greatschools are comprised by how students performed on average on recent statewide NCLB tests. You have certain groups of students in a school who might not do well, while others in the same school do very well, and the resulting average can be a very mediocre rating.
I would recommend visiting the schools, observing the teachers and classes, and then decide.
School ratings are a very inexact science. The best measure of a school is what you think of it based on your personal experience. If you're comfortable with your local middle school, there's no reason to send your child to it no matter what rating it might be given by any outside source.
