Mommielynn, the original poster is in Fresno, California. (If you look just below the blue bar that says "Greatschools Parent Community" near the top of the page, there is an area that says "You are here" and it shows if a person has put in their location.)
Hi Alma. First, where are you located? My family is full of music teachers both on the beginner level and up to professional level. My husband is an adjunct professor at Drexel University and teaches out of our home, along with my son KJ who is a professional musician/singer. If we can be of any assistance as to help you to find a music teacher, let me know. There are a lot of professional musicians here in the state of Delaware who are will to teach.
Perhaps you might be able to get a music major from a local college to donate some time teaching the students music. He might even be able to use it as an independent study project for credit for his degree. He advances his skills and the school get music lessons for free.
In most schools, money for paying teachers and everything else comes from the big school district budget. The school districts get their money from taxes that people pay. Everyone has less money this year.
I expect that other schools in your district have also stopped offering music classes. You should talk to other parents whose children are frustrated that there is no music, and go as a group to the local school district board meetings. They are the ones who decide how money is allocated to different subjects. They need to hear from parents. Unfortunately, when there is not enough money for every program, they have to decide what is most critical, art and music classes are often the first subjects to be eliminated. Unless people want to pay higher taxes, schools can't offer everything.
Hello. In order to help you, we need to be sure that we understand your situation. Can you explain what you mean by "denied a music teacher?"
Are you saying that the school did not hire a music teacher this year, so nobody at the school can take music? Or are you saying that your son wanted to take a music class, and there are some courses offered, but he did not get scheduled into one? Have you tried to talk to your son's guidance counselor about the situation? What did the counselor say?
