My grandson started pre-school at 2. He loved it. This was not daycare. When he was two, he went 2 days a week for 2 hours. When he was three, it was 3 days a week for 4 hours and at 4 he went 5 days a week for 4 hours. There was an option for a longer day, but we didn't want that. This was a nonprofit organization, so cost was reasonable. They had music and story time, time in the garden and most important of all, play time together. He loved going and being with the other kids. This may not be for all children, but our boy loved it and thrived. He was reading at 4, not because the pre-school taught the kids how to read, but because we read to him all the time. It was our favorite thing to do, so he just naturally picked it up. A really good preschool should expose your child to wonderful sounds and colors and lots of information, but never be formatted toward a goal...pre-school is all about exposure and framing it in such a way that learning is fun and exciting. There is plenty of time for goal oriented teacher later on!
Although he may be too start a pre-k program, you might find a combination daycare/preschool that would be interesting to him.
