You are right to be concerned. Your child may well be used to tutor the younger children. Teachers need to teach all the children and not use the older ones as teacher aides. Find out how much time the teacher spends with the older children. Keep tabs on their homework and ask questions about what happens in the classroom. Children should not be left to teach themselves or others. These multi-grade classrooms do not benefit the children. Are they in all the schools in your city? If not, why not. Where is the empirical evidence that they are successful?
Your fifth grader will not be repeating forth grade work in this combination class. He will stay on track with his fifth grade age peers academically.
Generally children that are selected for a combination class are those who have proven to be able to work independently. I would consider it a compliment to your son's maturity level that he was placed in a combination class. If you do have doubts about your child being able to work independently, then you should contact the school to discuss your concerns. If your son is not able to work on his own (and many 10 year olds are not), a combination class may not be the best place for him.
