Is the California Standards Test a good guage of how my son is progressing?

GeoDuran
Or as a education board member told me it only gauges whether or not he is good at taking tests.

How else can we compare if he is progressing at his present school?

I'd agree that some people are not good at taking tests especially standardized tests so I'd also agree that your son's results on this test are not necessarily indicative of his progress in school.
The best judge of his progress is you and his teacher. Is his reading improving? His writing? Are his verbal skills growing? Does he come home from school each day happy and content with his school day? Does he ever speak of what they're doing at school or mention with satisfaction some school activity?

If a child does poorly on a state test, there can be many reasons. Not being good at taking tests is one explanation, but he might also not know the answers, or he might not have been feeling well that day, etc. How old is your child? Did he ever take CST's before? If so, how did he do? What concerns do you have about his academic work? If you're worried about specific things, you can always opt to have your son take nationally normed achievement tests, not state standard testing. Private evaluators can administer them, but they will charge you. If you suspect your son might have a learning disability, you can request that the school do a comprehensive educational evaluation, which should include IQ and achievement testing, as well as tests in specific areas of weakness...
